In April I went to the Emergency Department in Calgary because I had sharp pains in my abdomen. I have a colostomy and it was determined that I had a blockage due to a mass near the Cecum. During my 4 day stay I was taken care of by the nicest people with big hearts. I was told I needed a colonoscopy every day for the three days I was in the hospital to determine what the blockage was. On my day of release I was told that apparently a referral was put in the system for a Colonoscopy which was surprise to me because I wasn't allowed to eat for the four days.
Upon release, I was told to follow up with the general surgeon which I did on the following Monday for an appointment. I saw two additional doctors; Urologist and Family Physician who were both very concerned that the system had no referral for the Colonoscopy. Both doctors placed a referral in the system.
As instructed by my Family Physician, I call the Colorectal office and they told me they were too busy to deal with me and to call back in two weeks. I called again four different times with no response back. The reason I kept calling is the voice mail said that they would call back within 48 to 72 hours.
In late May my wife called and firmly explained the situation on the voice mail and advised that I've had cancer three times with eight surgeries and would appreciate a call back. I finally received a call back for an appointment a few weeks later. End result, I do not have any issues.
I know we have a backlog for Colonoscopies but maybe we should take a closer look on how we process people.
