"About My Stay at Dr Vernon Fanning Rehabilitation"

About: Carewest Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre

(as the patient),

I was sent there for rehabilitation after I broke a pelvic bone.

I was one of the youngest clients in there at the time as most ranged from 70 and up. So quite diverse, which in itself can make life interesting.

PT and OT were extremely helpful and always very pleasant and smiling. Dr Berg was always very pleasant.

The nurses were very friendly and I felt those that really cared were run off their feet.  The Aides on the floor for the most part were kind and helpful. You were offered an alternative if you had the opposite sex showering you, although I believe they are all professionals.

Something I specifically thought that could be improved upon was professionalism on the floor. I saw a few of the staff on their phones on the unit and wondered could they have offered to take some of the clients on a extra walk, those of us that could go, or spent time with clients actually talking to them and listening to them and getting them engaged so they weren’t just sitting there being lonely and wanting to go home.

I heard a few of the staff talk about how they should’ve called in this day or that day, or that they are only there cuz they have to be, not because they enjoy their jobs.

I know that working with some clients can be hard but I don’t believe a client should ever have to sit there looking at a staff member on their phone or watch a football game instead of helping the people they are there to care for…???

First morning I got up and went to the washroom and then went to wash my hands I had to ask the person to stop so I could.

Overall, I do think this is a good place with nice staff, I just believe if you want to rehabilitate people you need to spend time with them doing the extra when time permits.

Thank you for your care!

Posting on behalf of Julia Marsh, Director of Care, RCTP, Carewest, Dr. Vernon Fanning Centre:

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your feedback- it’s truly appreciated! Your letter was shared during a recent team meeting, and it resonated with many of us. We appreciated the thoughtful balance of praise and constructive feedback. We take pride in being a friendly and helpful team. We are always working to improve our professionalism and patient engagement.

Our staff use mobile devices as part of their daily workflows, and while most of the usage you observed may have been work related, we agree that watching a football game during work isn’t reflective of our best. Nothing replaces the value of human connection. Hearing that we missed opportunities to connect with clients who seemed lonely: this really struck a chord with us.

Thank you for helping us grow. We are committed to building a culture of curiosity and connection. Your voice mattered.

Warm regards,

Julia Marsh
