I started seeing a new family doctor at Innovations Health Clinic. At my first appointment (a physical), the nurse took my height and weight. One of the first things my doctor then said to me is that my BMI is concerningly high and, “have I tried weight loss?”
As someone with a history of disordered eating, and who is extremely healthy by all other measures, I felt really frustrated that my health was completely reduced to the ratio of my height and weight. I wish my provider had asked me if I exercise regularly (I do), if I eat well (I do), if I have a lot of muscle (I do), and if I have any conditions that affect my body weight (I do).
I empathize with anyone else who is put in the position of having to advocate for themselves. I feel my provider has an extremely narrow metric of my health. If we didn’t have a family doctor shortage, I would have switched providers for my own peace. I now dread my appointments, as I feel my doctor may unfairly judge my weight.
