"Feeling Dismissed by Staff While in Severe Abdominal Pain"

About: University of Alberta Hospital / Emergency University of Alberta Hospital / Surgical

(as a service user),

I attended University of Alberta hospital ER a few months ago. for abdominal pain, severe swelling and bleeding from my intestines . I waited around 16 hours to see a doctor . During the excruciating  16 hours , I bled and bled every time I had to go to the bathroom, passing also intestinal matter. During that time every time I approached the nurses and explaining my condition, I felt they dismissed me insinuating that my condition was not a priority. I was informed that they are busy and they have other patients to attend.  I was in pain and cold waiting.  I asked for a warm blanket. The nurse said that they can give me regular blanket. I could not move fast and when I followed them slowly, the nurse gave me the blanket in what seemed to be an angry tone. Weak , disoriented from pain I could barely keep my eyes open. I felt my condition was worsening.  I contacted my Mum, she said she would contact the emergency department on my behalf about how I felt I was being treated. Shortly after my Mum called, I finally was admitted, but I believed, that during the 16 hours wait my condition got worse.  I was diagnosed with shinga e.coli. This could have ended very badly for me.

It is my general assumption that nurses should be careful of their dismissal of patients  with any kind of internal breeding as this may turn dangerous at any time. These patients are and always will be the priority.

I greatly appreciate for the doctors and nurses attending to me after I was admitted to the hospital,  but lack of concern I felt in the emergency room was dangerous and avoidable.
