My mom was undergoing cancer treatment. She was on her third or fourth line of treatment. The cancer was under control, but she was experiencing some concerning symptoms. As she had been told to do, she reached out multiple times to the triage nurse in oncology. Unfortunately, she was dismissed numerous times and told that the weakness and weight loss was because she wasn't getting enough exercise and that she needed to eat more. By the time she went in to the hospital to get checked out, it was too late to help her, as she'd had a series of mini strokes and had deteriorated further due to a number of factors. I'm not sure if it would have changed the outcome, but I do wish that she'd been encouraged to contact her family doctor, or go to emergency or something. We were told there was nothing else that could be offered. The end of her life would have been much less stressful if we'd been told we could have accessed palliative care long before she was admitted as an inpatient and put under the palliative care service then. She probably could have self-referred to home care in her final months as well, but at the time we had no idea that was an option.
