"Our Journey with Husband's Workplace Injuries"

About: Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre / Emergency Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre / Surgical University of Alberta Hospital

(as a carer),

My husband was involved in a workplace accident involving a propane explosion. The day it happened changed all of our lives forever. I almost lost my husband, my kids almost lost there father, and our extended family almost lost another member. He was rushed to the Emergency of RDHC and after assessment  he was airlifted to U of A. We spent several weeks in the Firefighters burn unit in the U of A (Edmonton). By far the best place with the most caring, attentive, and helpful medical staff there ever could be available.

In his second month - despite our push back...he was transferred to RDHC which was horrible. I had to teach each shift of nurses how to do his care. We felt like the doctor didn't want him there and that he made that clear in his attitude and how he refused to listen to our concerns. He even tried to discharge my husband within a couple days of being there. The staff seemingly refused to take concerns seriously despite repeated tries. He was sent to what they called a burn unit, which was actually a surgical unit... we had told the resident in U of A this but felt they didn't listen to us and made a point of telling us how they knew better (even though this doctor was not from Red Deer and we were).

Since then it has been a struggle to get results for my husbands needs when it comes to knee and shoulder surgeries.

He now struggles with constant pain, emotional stresses  and depression.

It is hard to process things and somedays supporting him is difficult  .......

but he is still here - is what I tell myself
