"Retiring General Practitioner"

About: Alberta Health Services

(as a service user),

I got notice last year that my GP of 18 years was retiring in 6 months. It was a letter mailed to me with info on how to request my records. It was good to get lots of advance notice with clear instructions on how to transfer my health records (at a cost mind you). However it was too bad that there wasn't more support in finding a new primary care provider. I did find someone to accept me as a new patient through my own research and follow ups. I didn't end up paying the $100 to get my health records copied (the office was still using paper charts) as I have access to almost everything in my electronic health record.  I am fortunate that I got notice of my GP retiring in advance, especially since I don't have frequent visits and if they had waited to tell me until I was there in person it may not have been with as much notice.
