"Dementia Led to My Husband's Admission to Bethany Airdrie"

About: Bethany Airdrie

(as a relative),

My husband when admitted, was still mobile, sociable but due to dementia, was forgetful.  Because he wandered, he was moved from a ward where he could enjoy socialization, to a locked ward where he had no one to talk to other than staff as all residents in that ward were and still are, extreme cases of mental and physical decline.  I believe there should be wards for those who wander, to keep them safe, but with others who are of the same condition so they can socialize and not feel lonely.

I appreciate that the facility is close to where I live. It is an attractive building in need of care. The building is in need of upgrading as the ward is run down and needs painting. The upholstered furniture looks like it should be cleaned. There seems to be a bathroom door that is missing and replaced with a curtain. There is no privacy for the bathroom. I feel there is a need for one more person on the memory care ward.  I am hoping for improvements.

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your story and reflections about your husband’s experience at Bethany Airdrie. We are deeply grateful for your openness and the care you’ve taken to highlight both what’s working well and where we can continue to improve.

Your comments about the importance of meaningful social connection for residents living with dementia are especially valued. This reinforces our ongoing efforts to balance safety, engagement, and quality of life for each person we serve. We will be sharing your reflections with our care and leadership teams as part of our continued focus on fostering belonging, individualized care, and purposeful engagement.

We also appreciate your feedback regarding the physical environment. Your note has encouraged our team as we move forward with the planned Aspen Enhancement Project—an initiative focused on refreshing spaces, updating furnishings, and adding items that support purposeful activity and a home-like atmosphere for residents and families to enjoy.

I would welcome the opportunity to connect directly with you to discuss your feedback further and share our plans. Please feel free to contact me at your convenience so we can continue the conversation and work together to enhance the experience for residents and families at Bethany Airdrie.

We wanted to share a short update with you. Since your post, we have set up the family–resident sitting room as a welcoming space to connect while we prepare for the larger project work ahead. The room now includes activities for families and staff to support more meaningful time together.

We’ve begun connecting with families and community partners to support this work, and we’re excited to be planning to start painting in the early new year—this will be the first step in moving the project forward.

Thank you again for our follow up discussions and sharing your story

Isleta
